Operational

Schöneiche articulated tram 48 (ex Heidelberg articulated tram 238), manufacturer Düwag, type GT 6A, in the direction of Alt Rüdersdorf.

Description

The tram of Schöneiche-Rüdersdorf is located on the border of Berlin, partly operating on Berlins territory. It has 1000mm tracks compared to Berlins 1435mm, no connection between the two systems exists despite the fact that both service S-Bahn station Friedrichshagen.

The tram system was opened in 1910 with benzene powered locomotives and trailers, electrified in 1912. In 1977 it was extended to Alt-Rüdersdorf (before this last stop was in Kalkberge). Since 1929 no new trams were bought, they only bought used trams from other cities.

During GDR times Reko and Gotha trams, after the change Tatra KT4D from Cottbus and since 1999 DUEWAG GT6 from Heidelberg. In 2009 they bought an Tatra KTNF6 from Cottbus (in operation since 2010) and they want two other ones. With four trams needed on workdays it would be possible to grant 75 % low floor service in future.
They wanted to modernise and rebuilt their old KT4D trams in the middle of the 90ties to KTNF6 as well, however the company (Mittenwalder Gerätebau) went bankrupt and this wasn't possible anymore, however the tram depot was already prepared for this tram type, a benefit for todays operation.

While the KTNF6 trams are an improvement for passengers the network needs to be suitable for uni-directional vehicles. Some years ago it was planned to extend the terminus at Friedrichshagen to the other side of the road as no traffic lights or a pedestrian crossing are there for connection of the S-Bahn station and the tram which can be dangerous some times.

Plans for connecting the Berlin network with the SRS were not realised, in this case it was planned to built a 3rd rail to the SRS depot for a turning loop of Berlin trams.
