Description
On Sunday 9 September, Open Monument Day celebrates its thirtieth anniversary. This is also an important date for the Tramsite Schepdaal (Dilbeek) as it will once again become an Open Monument after a long period of closure.
The successive extensive restoration phases of the protected local tram depot from 1887 only allowed guided tours.
From 9 September, this gem from the Belle Epoque can be visited again every Thursday and Sunday afternoon, and by appointment in the winter. An initial call for local volunteers was enthusiastically responded to and a motivated group is forming. However, more people with a heart for this heritage are still needed!
This opening was also a “must” for Herita/Open Monuments to obtain Flemish subsidies for further renovations, which have now been approved. Due to the ravages of time, there is still a lot of work to be done on the site.
One of the must-sees to visit on Sunday: after the carriage sheds, the steam tram shed has now been restored to its original state, with the return of the smoke vents in the roof that ensured that they could be kept under pressure day and night so as not to lose time on the first journeys at 3:30 in the morning!
The non-profit organisation Buurtspoorwegmuseum plans to be responsible for the public activities of the Tramsite and wants to reach a large audience, young and old, schools and seniors, mobile heritage enthusiasts from home and abroad, ... as well as organise events and rent out parts of the site.
After all, this is the very first tram museum in Belgium (1962) that houses a beautiful collection from the horse, steam, diesel and electric era as well as all the 19th century installations for the operation of the first local railway line in the history of the capital.
In addition to a festive September 9, the site is also open for free on Sunday September 16 during “Schepdaal Feest!”, with a free snack and drink.
