Today (24.08.2013) is Tallinn's tram celebration day, because it is 125 years since the first horse-drawn tram, or konka, started running in 1888. On the occasion of the jubilee, interesting events will take place, in which all Tallinners and guests of the city are invited to take part. This morning at 11 a.m., the gates of the historical tram depot in Kopli will be opened and the open day will begin, which will last until one o'clock in the afternoon. The board of Tallinna Linnatranspordi AS (TLT) ceremoniously raises the flag and declares the day open.
All those interested have the opportunity to get acquainted with old trams and listen to the explanations of experts, a good brass band is responsible for creating a happy mood. There will also be a quiz with prizes waiting for the winners. Balloons with the tram's jubilee logo will be distributed on the spot, and an employee of Eesti Post will stamp themed postcards with a special stamp. At 1 p.m., the parade of historical trams starts through the city on the route Kopli depot, Kadriorg, Viru square, Vabaduse square, Tondi, Kopli depot. Seven trams of different ages and purposes will participate.
The oldest of them is a horse-drawn tram, or konkwagon, which was built in 1988 based on old photos in Tallinn's tram depot. In reality, such an open konkwagon traveled around Tallinn between 1888 and 1918. In the parade, a brass band will ride along in the conka. There is also "Pauliine", converted into a cafe tram in 1993, which was completed in its original form in 1965 at the Gotha factory of the then German DV. In addition, an electric motor car, or brush tram, made in 1951 in cooperation with the "Ilmaris" factory, can be seen at the parade.
Other special-purpose tram cars, such as the brushing and grinding tram and the catenary repair tram, are certainly interesting. The parade is already completed by a newer articulated tram, which was modernized and equipped with a low-floor central section in 2004. Next Wednesday, August 28 at 6 p.m., a festive reception will be held in Tallinn Town Hall, during which letters of honor and commemorative medals will be handed over to worthy tram workers.
Currently, TLT has a total of 78 trams, but in 2015, 16 completely new modern trams must arrive from the Spanish CAF factory.
