Description
On a narrow track through Karl-Marx-Stadt.
It all began in 1880 with a horse-drawn tram on the unusual track width of 915 mm (approx. three English feet), which was still the benchmark in 1893, when electric operation began. From 1917 onwards, the aim was to gradually widen the track width to 1000 mm. But it was not until 1958 that VEB Verkehrsbetriebe Chemnitz began a really ambitious gauge conversion program. Due to many urban planning difficulties and austerity measures typical of the GDR, the later VEB Nahverkehr Karl-Marx-Stadt was only able to complete this in 1988.
Take a look back at the lively tram life and scheduled operations on the narrow track with the legendary three-car trains. These railcars from the 1920s were kept alive with great maintenance effort and ran until the last Rottluff - Zentrumsring line was closed on November 6, 1988. Of course, there are also photos from the 1920s and winter photos from the 1980s.
