New modern trams, but too late.
In Copenhagen, in 1960, at long last, they began to acquire new articulated vehicles from the factory Düvag in Germany. They were called "Mrs. Düsseldorf”, but unfortunately they arrived too late.
In the capital, the conversion to bus operation was based on plans from 1962, where only the most used tram lines were to remain until the city got its subway. The argument that the buses could be operated by one person, while a tram required three men in the engine and sidecar won the politicians' attention. In addition, according to Copenhagen's Sporveje, trams could not be operated by one person, which the rest of Europe was not aware of.
These plans were already changed in 1965 so that all tram lines had to be converted to bus operation within 10 years. The conversion was carried out at a record pace, so already on 22 April 1972 the last tram on line 5 ran in draw for the last time.
The next day, Copenhageners could say goodbye to their beloved trams at a farewell cavalcade. Many citizens had protested the massive demolitions, but they were ignored.
When the tramway network in Copenhagen was the largest, there was a line network of 99.8 km. with 18 different lines. In today's kroner, this investment would correspond to approx. DKK 20 billion
